Garmin Forerunner 405CX GPS Sport Watch with Heart Rate Monitor (Blue)

Great Price "Garmin Forerunner 405CX GPS Sport Watch with Heart Rate Monitor (Blue)" for $290.00 Today

I want to start off by saying I'm a longtime user of Polar watches - I've owned about 4 or 5. Yes, the design is cooler and can easily be worn as an everyday watch but it gets really old having to send in your product whenever something as small as a battery needs to be replaced. After the last time I had to send off my watch, I decided to look into an alternative and Garmin was where I looked first. I was specifically looking for a model that tracked my calories based on heart rate and also tracked my running speed/pace. I read so many reviews on the Garmin Forerunner 405CX and was a little leery about how complicated this watch seemed to be to operate. Nonetheless, I made the purchase last week and have used it 3 times now and I absolutely love it!

Here are some suggestions based on other reviews:

* Read the manual. There was one comment about how it takes a PhD to figure out this watch - I spent about 30 minutes setting up the watch and screens I want to be able to view on my runs and I was good to go.

* For issues with the bezel - the sensitivity settings can up adjusted: high, medium, low and you can lock the bezel so that the screens don't change.

Bottom line, this watch is amazing! It's cool to be able to upload your workouts and see such detail. Not a huge plus but I do like the fact that I don't have to wear a foot pod to track my running speed/pace outdoors. The Garmin Forerunner 405CX is pricier than what I paid for my Polar R300SX but the capabilities the Garmin Forerunner 405CX has just runs circles around the Polar!

Garmin 405cx - still needs work - G. Conran -
So far I've used this device for over 300 miles of running. It's better than some of my prior experiences with Polar, but overall, it's too pricey for the performance and features.

As mentioned in prior reviews, the scroll feature is ok, but it's kludgy and easily activated by brushing against the unit.

I have yet to get the software updates to work on my PC (windows 7). Very annoying when it continually asks to upgrade, you click yes, the software 'installs', but it doesn't work or update.

The data transfer is mediocre at best - the proprietary software that loads events to the web and to the PC need work, and have this weird way of simply losing data. I've had several sessions disappear on me. Very frustrating.

The virtual partner function, heartrate function, and time of run functions work, but they aren't the easiest to navigate while running, and they could have done a better job to make the info visible. I have good eyesight, and it's difficult to see the text while performing.

The software displays different info, but is also very basic and doesn't really do a good job of mapping historical info other than having items to click on where you can see information. Probably there are more features that can be used, but it's not intuitive other than to see how far you've run, heartrate, etc.

Thinking of moving to another PC? Good luck - it wiped my data on trying that. Support is the pits to try and get help - the message boards are full of folks trying this or that. Essentially this is yet another tool that falls far short of what it should do - reliably store, transfer, and allow viewing of data, and be able to massage that data easily into historical records/database for analysis.

The GPS function seems to work well - I've used it 3 times.

The watch needs to be calibrated to a track or use GPS to get accurate results - i haven't done that that, and using a treadmill means the watch is off by quite a bit until I do.

I suggest you spend your several hundred dollars elsewhere, or wait for some serious reworking of the software and technology. A pretty watch is all you get - the functionality, support, and reliability is not present in this device. I wish I could return it - it will be gathering dust along with my prior junky polar device soon.

Garmin Forerunner 110

Great Price "Garmin Forerunner 110" Today

NOTE THAT THIS IS A FIRST IMPRESSION REVIEW:
Here is some information I couldn't find elsewhere
1. The watch does not have "bike mode" as has its predecessors, but it CAN be set to tell you your speed in mph/kph.
2. The the light and right buttons take a bit of force to press while the lower left button is much easier. Maybe the tougher buttons are that way so your wrist doesn't press them.
3. When you start and stop the timer, the watch gives you a pop-up window that says "timer started" or "timer stopped" which takes a few seconds to disappear. It's kind of annoying.
4. When you tell the watch to go out of gps mode, you have to wait about a minute before you can tell it to go back into gps mode. The reverse is also true. Again, this nuance is not a deal breaker, but it's annoying.
5. When you press the "lap" button while timing. The screen will change and give you the lap time for about 10 seconds and then return to the screen that gives you total elapsed time. In other words, there is no way to view your lap time as it increases. It's only viewable at the END of the lap.
6. To reset the stopwatch, you have to hold "reset" for 3 seconds. That's irritatingly slow.

This watch is certainly less gigantic than the 205/305. I think it's a bit smaller than the 405 too. It has a solid, well made "feel" but is not very heavy. The band is comfortable for a plastic watch and has a circumference of about 9". As stated in the instructions, you have to hold still for the watch to acquire satellite signals. It easily gets signals faster than my 60csx which has a SiRf III chip, but I'm not sure how the 205/305/405's compare. Beyond telling the watch to report 12/24 hour mode, pace/speed, km/mi, and beeps/alarm only/off you can't customize much about what it shows you.

Sadly, I haven't had time to take the watch on a run or match it with my 60csx, but I will try to post that data this weekend.

Overall, this watch seems like it should do what it was made to do just fine. Due to its sluggish stopwatch, expense, bulk, and lack of simultaneous showing of elapsed lap and total elapsed times, I won't take it to the gym any time soon. That said, I am still excited to try it on runs and bike rides.

Also, I highly recommend Clever Training as a vendor. I ordered the watch on Sunday and got it on Wednesday.

UPDATE: 5-10-2010
I took this watch on a run along with my 60csx. For the duration of the 2.4 mile run, they stayed within 0.02 of a mile of each other (usually 0.01). I could not compare the speeds directly because the 110 only gives you a running average. It would be nice if Garmin would allow you to change that feature. Sometimes the 110 will get a signal in about 15 seconds, but sometimes it takes more like a minute.

Fairly easy-to-use - Katherine Llinas - SoCal
This watch is great if all you want is to track your running/cycling both while you're going and after you're done.

The best part is probably the software Garmin offers online. You can analyze all of your activities by speed, distance, pace, heart rate (if you get the heart monitor)...

The cons:
- It can take 5 minutes for the watch to hook up to satellites when you change to tracking mode, and that's a pain. I usually start it when I'm stretching so that by the time I'm ready to run, it's all set.
- God forbid you should accidentally select "use indoors", because then you have to wait for it to reset itself or it will simply act as a stopwatch and won't track you.
- I stuffed the watch in my gym bag, and it set off a button. My 7-mile run turned into a 6-hour track of a day in my locker and the ride home. The software is only usable with internet access, and it's not super easy to use-- i.e., I can't erase the extra 5 hours of that run. Which is a shame when I try to track my progress.

Overall, I'd say it's pretty simple as far as runners' watches go. Not a lot of bells and whistles, other than the obvious talks-to-outer-space thing.

FIrst run with 110 - Mark Garrigan - De Pere, WI United States
I run with a group that includes 3 305s and 1 405. Now I've added the 110. It works just like it's big brothers. Keep in mind this watch has a VERY limited feature set. Distance, Time, Pace, and Auto Lap. Connected to satellites fast and stayed connected. Simple to use for someone who doesn't want to wade through menu after menu. I was going to buy the 405 but when I saw this simplified version I knew this would be my first GPS watch. It has only the features I would use on the more expensive ones and you still get all the same data once you sync it with Garmin Connect.

As far as Clever Training is concerned. I highly recommend them. I had a question before ordering and they responded immediately. I ordered on a Friday night well after shipping hours. They shipped it out on Saturday and it was in my mail box on Monday.

Garmin Forerunner 50 Sports Watch with Heart Rate Monitor and USB ANT Stick

Great Price "Garmin Forerunner 50 Sports Watch with Heart Rate Monitor and USB ANT Stick" Today

My wife loves it! she has used it so much for her runs that the battery went out in 6 months! We went to a watch store to change it. It had no power unless we adjusted it, then it would lose power again...uggg. My wife loved it so much we just got a new one. I hope the battery last longer, if not, looks like she'll have another one for her birthday (easy gift). The set up is a bit of a pain, but if you call Garmin, they can help and it's only a one time deal. Other than the set up & battery, it's great. Tracks speed, distance thru-out the run (i.e. when you slow down it shows you on the computer via graph and text when and how long during the run you slowed down and what speed you going). Pretty cool. Just make sure you get the foot pod also.

Lame. works only some times. - Brian Decker -
Hate it. (hate a pretty strong word for this review). I'd like it if it worked. It works only some times. Most the time it resets itself, or doesn't pick up the heart rate or cadence pod for the bike. just getting it started is a long combination of button pushing memory madness. It is not a simple heart rate monitor. Buy a better modle. This one is bad. I've even sent it back to have it repaired and it came back noted as, "in working condition". Since the "repair" it's even worse. i'm not even going to try and resale it. I'd feel that I'm selling something broken.

A great watch, while it lasts - Mark S. - Ann Arbor, MI USA
I got this watch about 9 months ago, and was fairly happy with it until it stopped working. It went through the first battery in about 5 months and after having it changed it never seemed the same. I tripped during a race this Fall and while I didn't hit it on the pavement, it reset from the shock. Poof, mile 4 of a half marathon and my watch reads 00:00. Since then it's repeatedly reset at the slightest bump or jostle and now the battery's dead again. Now I have no watch and am not sure I want to give Garmin any more of my money.

Garmin Forerunner 310XT with Heart Rate Monitor

Great Price "Garmin Forerunner 310XT with Heart Rate Monitor" for $399.95 Today

I was initially worried about the size because the previous 305 seemed a bit large for me, but wearing this watch proved to be quite comfortable and less bulky, but still large enough for easy reference during the run / bike. The size may prove a difficulty if you swim with a wetsuit, as some may find it difficult to pull through wetsuit sleeves. The strap is more sturdy than most watches I have seen. The buttons seem easily easily differentiated (vs. the 205 and Polar's 300x offer, or Timex watches) and the waterproof capability is great, because now you can view your swim split if you race in a Triathlon that doesn't offer it. The battery is to last as long as they claim and over a 3 day training period plus race, did not require its recharge at all. The GPS antenna seems more capable beneath trees than previous models, and the HRM picks up quite readily with minimum hassle because of the snap on button that can be released (or even applied) with one hand. The HRM strap is improved over the Garmin 305 model in that the material is more comfortable, and the actual monitor is smaller in size that the Garmin 305 or the Timex HRM's. Over-all a very useful tool without being bulky, and bigger display than the 405. If you're ready to train with a HRM this should be a strong consideration, but if you need simply a speed distance pace monitor, there are less expensive offerings out there. And if color is a consideration, the orange and grey give it a sporty appearance.

I have no experience with the cadence meter or bike attachment for this watch.

Summary:

Pros:
Waterproof
Smaller than Garmin 305
Sturdy strap
Easy buttons
Improved GPS antenna
HRM softer / more comfortable
HRM easy snap on button
HRM smaller sensor size (vs. Polar or previous Garmin or Timex)
Sporty color

Considerations:
Still bulky enough to bother full sleeve wetsuit removal
Price may be out of budget for some athletes

FR60 Men's Black Watch

Great Price "FR60 Men's Black Watch" Today

I bought this watch because i wanted to monitor my HR during exercising at the gym as well as when i'm kart racing.

The HR belt likes a drop of water on the contact points where it meets your skin and as long as you do that the thing works flawlessly, every time. It was easy to setup and the big bonus is the software that comes with it. Along with the strap and watch you also receive what looks like a small USB thumb drive. This gets plugged into your PC and whenever the watch is in proximity of your PC it will upload all recorded data to your PC automatically; this works flawlessly every time as well. The data can later be reviewed via Garmin's free web based program where you can access the data from anywhere. You also have the option to download Garmin's Personal Trainer software (free) that allows you to store the data on your PC (not a web based program).

All in all a great product and at this price point it can't be beat. I was going to buy a Polar unit but after reading some of their reviews, i'm glad i chose this watch.

Swimmers beware - deepclue - New York
If you're a cross-trainer like me, you're out of luck as soon as you get into the water. The heart rate transmitter won't transmit a blip to the watch as soon as it's half an inch below water. This even if your watch is actually strapped to the heart rate transmitter (incredibly uncomfortable of course). One wonders then why they advertise the FR60 as being submergible down to 50 meters. I had this problem with the standard transmitter that came with the FR60 and thought a "premium" unit (advertised as being 30-meter-capable and sold separately) would solve it. Apparently not only was I wrong, Garmin knew this upfront (the manual says it won't work while swimming), took my money, and laughed all the way to the bank. What a poor, poor engineering choice to weaken the radio signal in the name (I suppose) of battery life. I'm very disappointed.

Nice heart rate monitor - Platofish -
I bought the Garmin FR60 to supplement my Garmin 305, primarily to use indoors. The Garmin 305 is an excellent device - but, I have a couple of gripes. Such as the battery running low after one use, and occasionally difficult to operate buttons. The FR60 doesn't have GPS, so its ideal for use indoors. Its simple to setup, and absolutely simple to use. Some people have complained about the lack of printed manual - I'm not sure why. Its all pretty obvious, or at least it was to me.

Watch and heart rate monitor work beautifully. The watch is much smaller than the Garmin 305, and reasonably good looking. The numbers are large enough to read, even if you normally wear mild to moderate reading glasses you should be able to read it ok without them. Data upload is trivial via the usb stick.

All in all a great little watch. One of the cheapest that allows data to be stored and then transferred to a computer or web site. Even using a mac, this seems to work ok.

Garmin FR60 Men's Black Fitness Watch Bundle (Includes Foot Pod, Heart Rate Monitor, and USB ANT Stick)

Great Price "Garmin FR60 Men's Black Fitness Watch Bundle (Includes Foot Pod, Heart Rate Monitor, and USB ANT Stick)" for $149.00 Today

I'm using this heart rate monitor along with the Garmin footpod and the USB ANT Transmitter for almost 2 months. This gadget really makes runners lives easier! I'm not an athlete, but I chose running as the sport I'm going to practice for the rest of my life, I hope. FR60 is a very useful, slim, friendly and robust running accessory. The monitor belt is thin and you almost don't notice it on your chest. Moreover it is made of rubber, what means that you can sweat as much as you can on it and it won't be stinking after your workout. Transmitter is awesome too! Within the sensor range, once the USB Stick is plugged to your computer, FR60 just starts to send all your data right away. Then you can use Garmin Connect web page to 'play' with your data. There are many different views, charts and reports so you can follow your performance gain over the weeks. Besides not having the same Pollar's 'pretty' interface and some additional features, FR60 does his job with accuracy with the advantage of showing your data during your workout in a much easier way (it's not confusing). The only reason I marked it with 4 stars and not 5 it is because the foot pod is a kind of hard to be calibrated in the begining. It is very precise when you keep your regular pace (98% to 99%), but you have to calibrate it again when you become faster. Anyway, this drawback does not change the greatness of this FR60 + FootPod + ANT Stick kit at all. I'm very pleased for knowing how much I've being running and also for following my heart rates evolution! FR60 makes me always excited for the next run!

A nice HRM, but loses the zones - Kevin Miller - Houston, TX USA
This is a very nice HRM. I like the HR strap. It works very reliably. It synchs with my Garmin Edge 705. It's nice to be able to download my cycling data from the 705 along with my running and gym data from the FR60 to the same website and keep track of all my exercise data in 1 place. It is not too unsightly and I wear it as my "everyday" watch.

A HUGE PLUS and in my case, a decision maker - you can replace the battery on the FR60 watch yourself. My last HRM was a Polar and I had to send it in every few months for a new battery. It cost me and a few weeks of having no HRM each time! I will never go back to Polar until they make the batteries replaceable.

A big negative - Many gyms do not yet have ANT+ exercise machines, so you can't "synch" to the machine like you can with a Polar.

I broke the rubber piece that holds the wrist strap in place after the clasping it. I contacted Garmin and you cannot buy a replacement for this part. My local watch shops didn't have anything for this purpose either. Garmin did offer to replace the entire watch, but I had lost my receipt. So, KEEP YOUR RECEIPT!

A piece of advice if you want to use it along with other Garmin products to update Garmin Connect. You need to log out of your Windows profile and then log back in to switch between devices. For some reason I can't upload from both devices back to back. So, I update from the FR60, log out of windows, and then log back in, connect my Edge 705, and it works perfectly.
